What is the difference between funeral and sympathy flowers?

Funeral flowers are typically arrangements designed specifically to be presented at the funeral service, and are usually organised and ordered by the family of the deceased. Sympathy flowers however are usually bouquet or vase arrangements that are sent to the family of the deceased, to their home address or to the funeral service. Art Stems is experienced in putting together arrangements for both funerals and sympathy bouquets - if you’re unsure about what you’ll require, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

What is a casket spray?

A casket spray is a large-scale, dimensional floral arrangement designed to sit atop the casket for the funeral service. These are a particularly beautiful way to honour the memory of the deceased and bring some beauty to the space where the service is being held. Art Stems offers a seasonal or rose casket spray, which can be made to meet any colour requirements you may have. Art Stems specialises in casket sprays that are beautifully sculptural and unique.

When should funeral or sympathy flowers be delivered?

Funeral flowers should be delivered on the day of the funeral, in the hours before the service begins. Art Stems has delivered to many churches and funeral homes across Melbourne, and is always happy to accommodate specific timing requests to ensure the arrangements for the service arrive when you need them. Sympathy flowers can be sent at any time, usually within two weeks of the passing of the deceased. It is however quite common for people to be inundated with flower deliveres immediately after the passing of their loved one, so it is also often appreciated when flowers are delivered a little later.

What sympathy flowers should I send?

Sympathy flowers don’t tend to have specific rules about colours or varieties that are most suitable. It can be a nice gesture to opt for colours and varieties that the recipient of the arrangement is most fond of - we have a variety of bouquet and vase arrangements that we can customise to your needs.

Typically, the most popular flower varieties for sympathy flowers are Lillies, Carnations, Gladioli, Roses and Orchids. Having said this, there are really no rules and it’s always a thoughtful gesture to opt for whatever flowers you think will bring some light to those who need it - if the recipient is particularly fond of a specific flower then feel free to stray from tradition.

What should the card say?

Once again, the answer to this question is as unique as you are! Depending on your relationship to the recipient of the flowers, you might opt for something simple, short and sweet to let them know you’re thinking of them, or you might feel compelled to write a longer, more personalised message that encapsulates your relationship to them and expresses a deeper level of sympathy. If you’re feeling stuck with regards to expressing your condolences, our florists are able to provide some guidance on simple expressions of sympathy when placing your order - if this is the case, please feel free to call us on 9387 0566.

We hope this is a helpful resource for ticking flowers off your list in this difficult time, but if you still have questions, our florists are here to help! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions you might have - we would love to hear from you.
